Patriot Golf Day

For Jake Northrup, PGA Professional at Bradford’s Pennhills Club, starting a fundraising page for this year’s Patriot Golf Day was a no-brainer. At the PGA Meeting in New York City this past year, Folds of Honor founder Dan Rooney spoke on the how and why of starting the foundation, referencing the struggles veterans go through and the impact his organization has had. After seeing the presentation, Northrup got right to work.

“It was gripping, the things he told us,” he said. “To see what he’s done and why he does it, it was all very impressive. We set up a fundraising page, and we’re hosting a tournament at Pennhills on June 23, where part of the entry fee will go to Folds of Honor.”

Wanting to do something for the community - and more specifically, for veterans - Northrup has already raised over $1,000. He’s working on getting a color guard for the start of the tournament and for someone to come sing the national anthem.

Holiday Valley is another regional course that aligns itself with Folds of Honor, and has for the past few years. Assistant PGA Professional Kyle Benish is the spearhead, asking for a $1 donation per round and creating displays in the pro shop all summer long.

Folds of Honor is a national organization that raises money and awareness for disabled veterans and their families and the families of fallen soldiers, while distributing the funds raised to individual, up to $5,000 scholarships. The money helps families with tuition, books, and the general cost that goes with attending higher education. Since 2007, it has helped countless families with financial assistance by awarding over 12,000 scholarships. Their motto says it best - “Honor their sacrifice. Educate their legacy.”

Too often, we hear stories of charitable organizations paying their leadership absurd salaries that takes away from the cause itself. One of great things about Folds of Honor is that 86% of the money raised goes towards the scholarships.

Patriot Golf Day is Folds of Honor’s largest fundraising tool. A national initiative, any course can participate, whether it’s raising awareness or actively fundraising. (As of spring 2015, over 5,200 courses have participated.) A tournament in Texas raised over $2 million last year. Professional golfers like Rickie Fowler have gotten behind the cause as well.

In addition to the tournament and fundraising page, Northrup and his guys will also do marathon golf - play as many holes as they can and get people to pledge money to raise some additional funds.

“This is one of the best causes I’ve worked with,” Northrup said. “These guys gave up everything, and some of the families don’t have them anymore. We want to raise money for this cause because of how admirable it is.”

The Patriot Golf Day Tournament at Pennhills Club is set for Saturday, June 23. It’s a noon shotgun start and a scramble format, $75 for members and $95 for non-members. There will be food and prizes, with part of the entry fee going to Folds of Honor. You can donate to Folds of Honor all summer at the Holiday Valley pro shop, or head to for more information on the cause.
