A New Home for Gallery 14731

As any good business owner knows, location is everything. That’s why, when a space opened up on the bustling sidewalk of downtown Ellicottville, Emily Hettrick jumped on the chance. “I loved our original retail space, but there just wasn’t the foot traffic I was hoping for,” she said about her previous location behind Kwik Fill. Emily’s new space on Washington Street occupies the storefront formally filled by The Boardroom on Main, next door to Adventure Bound.

Owner of Gallery 14731, Hettrick is a local girl who loves to ski with her family. While business ownership has placed big demands on her time, she has proven that it is still possible to get out a few days a week when winter is in season. Next to skiing, her other love encompasses handmade products and artwork. It is this second love that encouraged her to turn that passion into a business just a little over two years ago. The new space on Ellicottville’s main drag brings that  passion for art closer to the public eye.  Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the interior’s rustic yet refined look and feel. The sitting area offers a comfortable space to sit and take it all in. One of the many great things about old retail buildings are the awesome windows facing the sidewalk. Passersby get a good view into the gallery as well as an up-close look at the latest works on display. The gallery is currently set up in a traditional retail layout, but come September things will get a little more artsy. Emily’s intention is to offer a gallery format for artists to showcase their works - all for sale - for six to eight weeks. We’re not talking your standard oil paintings of fruit bowls here …

There are jewelers, candlemakers, Ellicottville branded products, soaps and more. Vanishing Pixies out of Little Valley distributes their handmade jewelry at Gallery 14731. Assorted rocks and gems give this jewelry an earthy look and feel that compliments any outfit or ensemble. Espacio Handmade has an amazing selection of their stainless steel flasks wrapped in hand-dyed, vegetable tan leather, stitched by hand and etched with some pretty whimsical sayings.  In another section of the store you’ll find beautiful, hand-cut, food-safe natural slate cheese plates and coasters by RockTimber.

And oh yeah, there are paintings. Emily is always on the lookout for new and interesting works, and is happy to have Buffalo artist Peter Fowler on display and on sale at gallery. Peter paints outdoor scenes and images in a unique layered oil technique that blends minimalist design with a watercolor-like look. Originally from Denver Colorado, Peter started his painting career while working as a computer consultant in Boston, MA. He later moved to Europe in 1989, which allowed him to observe and absorb the artistic heritage and hone his own style. After ten years in Seville, Spain, Peter found his way to Buffalo. He has been showcased all over the area including the Burchfield Penny Art Center.
Emily plans to attend a few handpicked buying shows to keep the gallery fresh and new through each season. If you’re looking to design a unique space in your home, condo or office, be sure to stop in. Current hours at the gallery are Tuesday through Sunday 11am-6pm. Gallery 14731 is also taking part in the Stroll the Streets events throughout the summer in Ellicottville with special activities and attractions for everyone. Find out more about the gallery on their Facebook page, Gallery 14731.
