Golfing for the Museum

We’ve written about the Eldred WWII Museum a lot in The Summer Local the past few years, and with good reason. One of our area’s hidden gems, the museum (and its director, Steve Appleby) will take you on an in-depth, immersive trip into the world’s greatest conflict. If you’ve got a connection to the war - and most of us do - then a visit to the museum needs to be on your to-do list this summer.

On Saturday, July 8, Bolivar Golf & Country Club in Bolivar, NY will play host to the 2nd Annual Eldred WWII Museum Golf and Chicken BBQ Benefit. The tournament offers you a chance to help the museum remain a viable source of expertise in historical artifacts and knowledge. And with the atrocities that occurred during the war, forgetting should not be in our vocabulary.

The tournament committee looks to build on last year’s resounding success, which raised close to $30,000 for the museum. Diana Phalon, the tournament director, told me that they couldn’t have dreamed of a better outcome.

“Last year was incredibly busy,” she said. “We raised a lot of money and everywhere you turned people were having a good time. Our sponsors were very generous and helped draw a lot of people to come play, which we’re very grateful for. So far for this year, we’ve gotten quite a few foursomes signed up to play - so we couldn’t be more excited for round 2.”

Some of the aforementioned sponsors made significant contributions. The Port Allegany Veterans Memorial Group wrote a check for $10,000, while Zippo’s Blasdell Foundation added another $2,500. Coupled with the funds the actual tournament raised, and the museum had a significant monetary bolster for operational costs.

“Premo Limo, a limousine service, is giving away ‘An Evening in Ellicottville’ - which gives the winner a free ride in their SUV limo to Ellicottville with a stack of gift cards,” Phalon said. “Last year, we had prizes from major sports teams like the Buffalo Sabres/Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers/Pirates and Philadelphia Flyers. The Erie Otters and Buffalo Bisons both gave us game tickets to give away. So we’re able to offer some pretty great prizes based on the generosity of our sponsors.”

Last year, the tournament saw a full house of 96 golfers. They’re increasing the field to 116 this year because they had to turn so many people away, and the tournament committee figures they’ll fill that number no problem.

You can expect your traditional tournament contests, like closest to the pin and longest drive, but they’re also offering a putting challenge and “don’t lose the ball” as well. And if you’d like to be a sponsor, there are multiple tiers for you to choose from.

“If you don’t want to golf but still want to come to the tournament, we’re selling tickets for just the dinner for $13,” Phalon said. “It’s $240 per foursome, which includes golf, cart, dinner, the in-golf games and a door prize ticket as well.”
