The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) will give us S.A.D. Brains (and S.A.D. Bodies). IF we eliminate poor forms of sugar, refined carbohydrates (especially wheat), processed fats and oils, adulterated dairy and food chemical toxicity, THEN we can recreate High-Functioning and HAPPY Brains. In addition to dietary changes, both detoxification and supplementation will also aid in focus, concentration, memory, intelligence and overall brain function. The brain is extremely sensitive to nutritional problems, creating dysfunctions first in thought and mood before any physical illness is seen. Do you desire better brain function? I believe we all do.
Epigenetics is the science showing that the body has markers - called the epigenome - that switch genes on and off. Diet, exercise, detoxification and supplementation all can improve the way your genetics are expressed. This genetic information is passed onto your offspring. To a large degree we can control our health directly to our bodies and through our epigenome. Here are nine basic ways to get started.
GOOD FATS - DHA
Good fats (Omega 3s) are essential to the developing brain and the adult brain. Essential fatty acids compose about 15% of the brain. Omega 3 fatty acids are crucial to the frontal cortex (associated with higher brain function) and the brains of infants. Deficiencies in DHA (the most abundant Omega 3 in the brain) result in decreased learning abilities for both children and adults. Deficiencies of Omega 3s are quite common in our country. Great food sources include: deep ocean-fish (tuna, herring, salmon, anchovy, mackerel and sardines), dark green leafy vegetables (organic), pasture raised eggs, walnuts, macadamia nuts, flax seeds and hemp seeds. DHA comes in capsule form (250 mg/capsule) and chewable form.
POWERFUL PROTEINS - PEA POWDER AND ALGAE
The building blocks of proteins are amino acids. Amino acids are used to make neurotransmitters, enzymes, muscle and other important parts of our body. Neurotransmitters allow the brain cells to talk to each other. Deficiencies or excesses of these tiny molecules can wreak havoc on our moods or thought functions. It has been effective in my practice to test the urine for peripheral neurotransmitters in order to assess what is going on in the brain. Treating imbalances with specific amino acids (20 total with 9 being essential in our diets because the body cannot make them), herbs, vitamins and minerals has made a great difference in people’s lives regarding anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD and even mental disorders such as autism spectrum and schizophrenia.
One easy dietary change for anyone to make is eliminating sugar and simple carbs for breakfast and adding at least 25 grams of protein and complex carbs. Love & Peas with non-dairy milks (coconut, flax, almond or hemp) and frozen berries is a great way to add highly digestible protein to your day. Two scoops contain 20 grams of protein from yellow and green peas with gluten-free grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. With a fruit sweetened and vanilla taste, this shake is great for the whole family!
Super Algae is also a great way to ingest more amino acids. Each capsule contains three sources of algae: spirulina (fresh water blue-green algae), Klamath Lake blue-green algae and chlorella (a single-cell green algae). Taken daily with breakfast, lunch and mid-afternoon, this combination of amino acids can balance blood sugar levels, increase energy, stabilize mood and promote better brain function.
Various foods can react differently in every person, but the top 9 current foods that can cause inflammation in the brain are: sugar, wheat (gluten), dairy, corn, soy, peanuts, eggs, nightshades (onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant), alcohol (especially the sulfites) and food chemicals (dyes, sweeteners, fillers, etc). Eliminate one or more of these foods from your diet for 21 days, assess how you feel, reintroduce one food at a time and reassess your symptoms, mood, energy and sleep.
DETOXIFICATION - CLEANSTART

Water is the most abundant molecule in our bodies! The same goes for our brains … 70%. Dehydration can lead to brain fatigue, headaches of many types and altered short-term memory. As a general rule, one half of your body weight in ounces as a daily goal will heal many ailments.
VITAMINS - B COMPLEX
B vitamins are especially needed to help the body make neurotransmitters, yet we lack insufficient intake of fruits, raw vegetables (cooking denatures these vitamins easily) and whole grains. White sugar, white flour, white rice and processed foods not only contain zero B vitamins but they also stress the body enough to rob us of these vitamins and other nutrients. Nutri-Calm is an excellent source for a B complex because it also contains schizandra fruit, choline, inositol, bee pollen, PABA, lemon bioflavonoids, valerian root extract, passionflower flowers extract and hops flowers extract. The combination of these plants helps the B vitamins to be more absorbable while also calming the brain and promoting more restful sleep.
MINERALS - MAGNESIUM
Magnesium l-threonate is a form of magnesium that easily crosses the blood brain barrier and is highly absorbable in the brain where it plays a vital role in nerve synapses. Mind Max combines this form of magnesium with gotu kola, bacopa leaf and ginkgo leaf for increased brain circulation and brain health.
HERBS - DMAE
Focus Attention’s main ingredient is DMAE, which is a biodynamic nutrient used for memory and learning enhancement. One dose of either the powder in water or capsules provides 5-6 hours of focused attention needed for work or school. Also added is slippery elm (aids nutrient absorption and is used as a soothing and cleansing herb for the digestive system), l-Glutamine (an amino acid that supports healthy brain activity and mental ability), lemon balm (soothes the nervous system), Grape seed extract (neutralize brain-damaging free radicals caused by toxins or over-stimulated brain metabolism) and Ginkgo biloba (supports brain and circulatory health).
Rosemary, Tei fu, Peppermint, Lemon, Cinnamon, Clove and Eucalyptus are all great essential oils to use for improved brain function. Use these oils on your hands and breathe in as often as needed or use in an aromatherapy diffuser.
