A Walk in the Park ... Literally

When you think of Spring, you might imagine yourself getting back outdoors for a hike, or hopping on the motorcycle and riding anywhere and everywhere!  Springtime is here in Cattaraugus County, better known as the Enchanted Mountains!  For some, this is their favorite time of year, with new growth all around, warmer days and the opening of all the amazing parks!   We are home to Allegany State Park, Griffis Sculpture Park, Rock City Park, Sky High Adventure Park and the Onoville Marina, all of which begin to welcome visitors at the start of May.

Allegany State Park, which offers year-round camping, springs into warmer weather with two major events and a very competitive race.  On May 3, things will really start to heat up with the Allegany Adventure Run, giving competitors three different course distances to choose from along the Art Roscoe Trail System.   Attention Geocachers … set your coordinates for ASP May 17-18 for the park’s annual Geobash event.  Now in its 9th year, an array of activities are being planned including night caches, games, educational seminars and a free pancake breakfast.   Come back later in the month for the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage.  Held each Memorial Day weekend, this is an outdoor learning experience where participants can enjoy special programming on everything from bird banding to a folk concert.

Rock City Park Olean will offer visitors a spectacular view of the Enchanted Mountains from “Signal Rock,” where they can see all the new leaves forming on the trees.  Discover 80-foot tall rocks left over from the ice age.  Hike the trail that leads under, around and sometimes through these magnificent rocks, then check out the souvenir and rock shop or the Fluorescent Light Rock Room.  Plan a trip to Rock City Park May 10-11 for their Arts and Crafts Show.  Artisans will display watercolors, oils, sculptures, photography, glass, metals and much more!

The grass is always greener at Griffis Sculpture Park, where nature combines with art in a setting like no other.  Hike along the trail and discover over 250 larger-than-life sculptures.  Adults like the park because of its beauty, while children like the park because you can climb on some of the sculptures!

Get rid of that cabin fever by taking a nice long drive through Amish country.  Slow down and enjoy a simpler way of life along New York’s Amish Trail, which runs right through the Enchanted Mountains.  The back roads of the western side of Cattaraugus County is home to a community of Old Order Amish.  Adventure through this area to find unique handiworks and learn about the culture of these people, who live separate from the modern world.   You will find yourself relaxed and renewed with views of farmlands, open spaces, and charming backdrops.

Live to Ride?  Then you have been waiting all winter to get your motorcycle out on the open road.  Keep a heads up for two motorcycle events in our area.  First, join the rest of the gang at Gowanda Harley-Davidson on Memorial Day for their Ride to Remember on May 27.  Honor and respect those who served and the reason behind the day.  Then let loose at the Hollywood Happening, one of the area's largest motorcycle events.  Set for May 30-June 1, it’s three days of live bands, contests, vendors and rides to benefit the ongoing restoration efforts of the Hollywood Theater.

No horsing around, the Enchanted Mountains is a great place to find happy trails for horse lovers to ride on.  Looking for horse related events and get-togethers?  Keep EnchantedMountains.com/Horse on your favorites list.  Our local stables, clubs, and arenas are committed to sharing their passion for all things equestrian with experienced or beginner riders.  Let The Crosspatch take you on a guided trail ride with your own horse or one of theirs.  Nothing quite compares to seeing the countryside on horse.

So get into the Swing of Spring by making a trip to the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York.  For information on any of these activities or events, or to request  FREE brochure, call 1-800-331-0543 or visit EnchantedMountains.com.
