The salon boasts a product section loaded with popular Paul Mitchell shampoos and conditioners, including the award-winning Awaphui Wild Ginger, Forever Blonde and Tea Tree lines. “If you have an idea of the hair products that your wife, daughter or mother uses, I would be happy to recommend any of our Paul Mitchell items, which make excellent gifts,” said Monica. Solutions for hair clarifying, color care, conditioning, curls, extra body and smoothing, to name a few, are available; hair sprays, mousses, gels, and basic styling tools are also stocked on the shelves.
WEDDING PARTY UP-DO’S
Ellicottville is a destination wedding hot spot and so is Reflections for styling wedding up-do’s. If booked in advance, the salon happily closes their doors to outside business the morning of the wedding and exclusively styles the hair of the bride and her bridal party.
If the bride wishes, she can book an appointment for a wedding day hair style “trial run.” The date of the trial run is traditionally a month or two before the wedding. The bride comes in, usually with a family member or a few friends and has her hair styled several different ways. The bride then chooses the hair style she likes the most for the wedding day.
On the day of, the salon provides fresh brewed coffee, and brides are permitted to bring any other necessities, such as champagne, juices, pastries or fresh cut fruit. Although they have some photos of up-do styles, the salon prefers that brides and bridesmaids bring in photos of the hairstyle that they would like. Monica added, “Photos always help. That way, we know exactly what you like and have the ability to help create a picture-perfect day for you.”
When planning your wedding in Ellicottville, take a moment to drop in at Reflections. Monica, Sarah and Tracy will greet you with their welcoming smiles, and you can see what the salon has to offer you on your special day. Or give the girls a call at 716-699-8757 to reserve your wedding day trial run or bridal party appointment.
A Sanctuary Fit for Nature Lovers of All Ages
28 Parkside Drive, Ellicottville, NY 14731
Imaginably, as many couples travel to or live in Ellicottville throughout their lives, some fall in love with the area and can’t foresee being married anywhere else. However, if the options of exchanging vows slopeside or inside a place of worship have never appealed to you, the Nannen Arboretum of Ellicottville might have just what you’re looking for.
Also known as the “Jewel in the Crown of Ellicottville,” the Nannen Arboretum is nothing short of a romantic refuge for nature lovers. Nestled secretively at the intersection of Parkside and Fillmore Drives, this 8-acre site is a sanctuary for hundreds of trees, shrubs, perennial flowers and herbs. Along the “nature trail,” an accessible paved walkway, you will not only find a Japanese meditation garden and a pond (Lake Nipponica), but you will also find two wonderful locations for a wedding ceremony: Chapman Nature Sanctuary and Northrup Nature Hall. In the backdrop of both of these picturesque locations, enjoy the rolling hills that surround Ellicottville in lush green color during the summer, or sprinkled with the boldest of colors during the fall.
Weddings can be uniquely commemorated at the Arboretum in several ways. Plant a tree or shrub; choose from a wide variety native to the Western New York area. Memorialize your nuptials with a personal message or special name on a brass plaque to be placed on a wooden bench, or follow the popular wedding trend of having your names inscribed on a memorial brick for the Celebration Walkway. Preserve your special day and revisit your memorial for anniversaries to come.
For further information regarding wedding planning at the Nannen Arboretum, contact the Town of Ellicottville Offices at 716-699-2100. Locations described for weddings also make great locations for outdoor educational events, including field trips and tours. Nannen Arboretum is managed by the Nannen Arboretum Society, a not-for-profit, volunteer based organization dedicated to providing home garden and natural resource education, as well as an opportunity for nature appreciation and leisure.
What better way to view the Nannen Arboretum than to attend Ellicottville’s first ever “NIGHT LIGHTS” event, which takes place at the Arboretum on weekends starting May 15 through the end of the month. Building on a centuries-old tradition of performing music after dusk in a serene, garden-like setting, the event will combine strategically placed lighting to literally shed a different light on some of the more than 200 species of trees in the park. Night Lights, along with different musical performers each evening, will create an entirely new magical experience for visitors.
The Night Lights entertainment schedule includes a drum circle on Friday, May 16; the folk-rock duo of John & Mary from 10,000 Maniacs on May 17; and Buffalo, NY band The Observers on May 24. Local visual artists will be displaying their own creations and creating works on-site, and the Ellicottville Rotary Club will be on-hand to host a snack bar.
Night Lights is created by SitlerHQ, the same group behind the popular Night Lights at the Gardens (Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens), Night Lights at Griffis Sculpture Park (East Otto, NY) and Night Lights at The Heron (Sherman, NY). Using predominantly LED lighting, the Night Lights crews spend up to two weeks transforming landscapes with illuminations, artwork, and entertainment. The goal of a Night Lights show is to create a soothing environment for guests as they examine the natural world bathed in lighting. Organizers believe there is no other experience like this in North America.
Night Lights at the Arboretum will take place on the following dates: May 15-18, May 22-25, and May 29-31. Doors will open at 7:30pm, with the lights show visible around 8:30pm. Admission is $8 for adults and teens; children ages 12 and under are free with an accompanying adult. Tickets are purchased at the front gate of the Arboretum, located next to the Cornell Cooperative Extension building at 28 Parkside Drive in Ellicottville.
